My Review:

I really enjoyed the previous book in the Hearts of Oklahoma series, His Holiday Prayer, The book focuses on Kate Rainbolt who is offered the job as foreman at her family’s ranch.
Jess McNally, her ex-boyfriend, has accepted it although her brother offered it to her.

What should Kate do? It’s harder for her as she’s recovering from a rodeo accident. I felt like I got to know the characters in this book well, and that’s what I liked about the previous one too, because I got to know the characters well.

I feel Tina Radcliffe has a great eye for detail.

The Cowgirl’s Sacrifice is a story of loyalty, facing the past and working out what you want.

I have loved books three and four in the series and I want to discover the first two as well as other books by Tina Radcliffe.

Thanks to Tina Radcliffe and Harlequin for my ARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.

Extract:

Kate Rainbolt’s gaze followed the man who entered Eagle Donuts. He moved past the tables of early morning customers with smooth, long-limbed confidence. A tall man, he wore a black barn coat, faded jeans and scuffed boots, not unlike dozens of other Oklahoma cowboys.
She was ready to dismiss him when something set off an internal warning, urging her to take a second glance. Kate tensed and stepped away from the counter, feigning interest in a display of coffee mugs. When the cowboy lifted his head and tipped back the brim of his hat to assess the inside of the shop, she saw his face, and her heart slammed against her chest.
Jess McNally.
She’d been back in Rebel for an hour, and naturally, she’d run into her former beau.
Her only beau.
Usually, Kate kept her emotions hidden behind a mask of greasepaint and an outrageous, red felt cowboy hat. But she wasn’t a rodeo clown any longer, and it would take work to hide the emotions rocking her to the core. The last time she’d seen Jess was ten years ago, when she’d rejected his marriage proposal. It was unfortunate that time had only improved his good looks. Dark hair peeked out from beneath a black Stetson, and a scruffy five o’clock shadow emphasized the angles of his face.
Jess’s slate-gray eyes connected with hers, and she froze, chin down, her gaze going everywhere but back to the cowboy in front of her. She willed her pulse to slow before she dared to meet his gaze again.
Ten years. He should not have this effect on her after all that time.
“Kate?”
“Hey, Jess.” She shoved her left hand in her coat pocket, ignoring the twinge in her casted arm and the pain that shot through her middle as she jostled her tender rib cage.
“You’re back in Rebel?” he asked.
She lifted her face. “For now, I am. What about you?”
“Yeah. I’ve been back for a few weeks.”
“So you’re visiting?” She prayed that his next words would be that he was leaving town soon. Regret wasn’t on her schedule today, and she lacked the mental stamina for a what-if game about whether or not she’d walked away from the best thing that had ever happened to her.
“Visiting? No.” He said the words slowly, paused and looked at her.
A shiver galloped down Kate’s arms.
“I guess Reece didn’t mention…” Jess ran a hand over his face.
“Reece?” Her second eldest big brother hadn’t said anything special when she’d called to let him know she was on her way from Tucson, only that it was about time. His mantra du jour.
“I’m the foreman at Rebel Ranch,” Jess said. “New position.”
Kate blinked and focused her attention on the tips of her hand-tooled Western boots while trying not to reveal how surprised she was. Because she was absolutely surprised. She’d been offered the position of ranch foreman at Christmas. Her brothers Reece and Mitch ran the popular guest ranch and had mentioned it to Kate at their brother Tucker’s wedding.
“Reece is expanding the cattle side. I’ll be supervising production and care of livestock and horses.”
“Yes. I know about the expansion,” she said. Though she worked to keep her voice neutral, anxiety had her gnawing on her lip.
There was another lengthy pause between them. Jess hesitated as if measuring his words. “Is my taking this job a problem?”
There was no way she’d answer a loaded question like that. She was going to be living at the ranch temporarily. Even short-term, that would be way too close to Jess McNally, the man who had somehow managed to steal her job right out from under her. Yes, there would definitely be problems. Several of them.

My Review:

Jo Bertoletti is new in town, and pregnant. Not in need of heartbreak again, she is looking to start again. Ozzie Lakeman is a fireman in the town and is open, honest and friendly.

Butterfly Harbor, the town where the novel is set, is a beautiful place, but will Jo put down roots here?

I was drawn into the story and enjoyed every minute of it. Both characters have their flaws yet are well created by the author.

Building a Surprise Family is the first book I have by. Anna J.Stewart. I am coming in very late to the series as this is book ten, but I enjoyed it so much that I want to catch up with the rest of the series.

Thanks to Anna J. Stewart and Harlequin for my ARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.

Excerpt:

The truck’s engine suddenly went silent. Ozzy walked over to greet the driver. “That is a thing of beauty,” he said as the door opened and the driver dropped to the ground in front of him.
Every thought he had disappeared straight out of his head.
Tall, curvy and with sun-streaked blond hair knotted into a messy pile on top of her head, Butterfly Harbor’s latest arrival faced Ozzy with a wide, welcoming smile on her round face. Beneath the barely-there sunlight of the May morning, her skin seemed to glisten in the chilly air. She had light brown eyes, almost amber with flecks of gold that sparkled when she smiled. She wore snug jeans that accentuated everything a man like him enjoyed, sneakers that looked as if they’d been worn into the ground and a snug short-sleeved turquoise T-shirt that displayed a surprisingly round stomach.
The new foreman was a woman?
A pregnant forewoman?
“Didn’t realize there’d be a welcoming committee.” The woman closed the truck door and stepped up to him. “I know I wasn’t expected until next week, but I wanted to get a jump on settling in. I’m Jo Bertoletti. You are not Mayor Hamilton.” She gestured to Ozzy’s T-shirt with the BHFD logo on the front peeking out of his jacket.
“Ah, no, ma’am.” Ozzy shook her offered hand. Her skin felt rough and calloused, proving she was someone who was used to getting her hands dirty. Beneath that observation, a dull buzz shifted through his system. “I’m Ozzy Lakeman. I was in the diner when you drove down Monarch Lane. Just thought I’d come up and be the first to see what was happening here.” His own smile widened as something oddly definitive dinged. “I guess that makes me the welcoming committee.”
“I appreciate that, Ozzy Lakeman of the BHFD.” She beamed at him before her expression shifted into a knowing one. “Judging by the look on your face, I’m betting you weren’t expecting someone…like me.”
“I…uh.” There had to be a way to answer that without sounding like a complete sexist or jerk. “Like you?”
Jo snickered. “Don’t worry, Ozzy. Not the first time I’ve seen that reaction when I arrive on a site. And it’s not because of the little bun I’m baking in here. Bun in the oven. That’s such a weird phrase. Although come to think about it, I have spent my fair share of time waiting for my sourdough starter to develop.”
Ozzy could only nod. His ears were buzzing and his heart did an odd little skip and jolted in a manner he’d never felt anytime he’d swiped right.

Excerpt:

The door to room 204 in the Pleasant Residential Care center squeaked open. Avery Hammons glanced that way but didn’t greet the visitor. She finished taking the vitals of her patient, then gave the redhead at the door a questioning look.
“There’s an incredibly gorgeous cowboy waiting for you at the front lobby. He might be all hat and no cattle, but I’d take him if I wasn’t happily engaged.” Assistant to the administrator of Pleasant Residential Care, Laura Anderson, winked.
“Gorgeous cowboy type?” Avery asked after settling her patient’s arm back on her bed. She smiled down at the woman, hoping to reassure her. “Margie, your pulse is strong and your blood pressure is better than that of most twenty-year-olds. In another month you’ll be back to walking Dudley in the park.”
Margie Duncan drooped a little, her mouth pulling down in a slight frown. That look had become one of her few signs of discontentment. She’d been a model patient in the four weeks she’d been at the facility, recovering from a fractured hip. “I’m so sorry for making a fuss. I just felt a little funny when I got up a bit ago. You’re probably right about being anxious. And I can’t wait to get home to that silly dog.”
The same silly dog who had wrapped a leash around Margie and tripped her as she went down the front steps of her house a month ago. Avery smiled past the worry she felt for her patient. As a supervising RN, worry was a big part of her job.
“You don’t have to apologize, Margie. That’s what I’m here for. Also, you could have your daughter bring Dudley in for a visit. I won’t tell.”
“Could I really?” Margie’s face lit up at the mention of her poodle.
“I don’t see why not.”
From the door, Laura cleared her throat. “About the visitor…”
The last thing Avery wanted was a visitor. Especially a male visitor. The only man she could think of was Tucker Church. They’d been on a few dates, nothing serious. She doubted he would visit her at work, especially since she’d made it clear they were just friends and would remain friends. Avery doubted she would ever be at a place in her life where she let someone be more than a friend. It seemed trite to say but she was content with her life as it was. She had a job she loved, people in her life whom she loved and she was building the home she’d always dreamed of. Why complicate things?
Fortunately, Tucker, as a friend, knew her and her past. He knew her heartaches and her secrets. That made it easy to explain to him why she wasn’t keen on new relationships.
“You’d best get out there to your visitor,” Margie encouraged.
Avery winked at the older woman. “Guess I have to go see who this amazing visitor is and what they need with me. What does it mean, all hat and no cattle?”
Margie laughed at that. “That means he looks like he might be a cowboy but he’s probably never seen a cow in his life. I bet he has a pair of shiny boots that ain’t ever kicked up the dirt, and a hat that sits on top of his head like a city feller.”
“Gotcha.” She turned to Laura. “Do we know why our cattle-less visitor is here?”
Laura smirked a bit. “Community service. He said the law grabbed him on his way into town and gave him an ultimatum. Jail or community service that he failed to serve eleven years ago.”
“Eleven years ago?”

My Review:

Taryn has her grandmother in her life and is in town to help her get more care for her is pregnant but she has nothing to do with Noah. When the baby is born, will Noah have what it takes to help Taryn raise the baby?

She’s prepared to be a single mother if needs be, but will love blossom again between her and Noah, or will they be just friends?

I love books with a family at their centre. I was rooting for Taryn whatever decision she took and I was enjoying witnessing their story unfold.

The mountain scenery was quaint and breathtaking.

Rocky Mountain Baby is the first book in the series that I have reviewed by Patricia Johns, as well as the first overall. I felt she created characters well and that the pace of the book was quick.

Excerpt

The door opened and a tall man stepped inside. He was broad shouldered, lean and looked to be in his early forties with just a touch of gray at his temples. A pair of glasses set off his slate blue eyes. He wore a pair of gray dress pants and a crisp, white button-up shirt without a tie. His belt looked expensive. He hesitated when he saw her, and his gaze dropped down to her belly.
“This is our general manager, Noah Brooks,” Angelina said. “I asked him to come by and meet you. You’ll be working quite closely with him for the next couple of weeks, and he’s a fount of knowledge for everything from operations to food and beverage.”
“Of course,” Taryn said, and she rose to her feet and shook his hand. “I’m Taryn Cook with Cook Marketing.”
He didn’t answer at first, meeting her gaze questioningly. “Right. Taryn. Just call me Noah.”
Noah released her hand and gave her a nod. That seemed to be a common name these days. She’d met another Noah not too long ago…
“Let me show you your office, then,” Angelina said, also rising. “I hope you’ll be comfortable there. If you want any food or drinks delivered to your office while you’re working, just give Janelle a call down at the switchboard, and she’ll get you anything you need. It’s all complimentary, of course.”
“That’s very kind.” Taryn bent to pick up her leather tote, and scooped up the water bottle, too. She’d been advised to stay hydrated at this point of her pregnancy, and in the interest of allaying her obstetrician’s worries, she was following her instructions to the letter.
Angelina led the way out of her office, and Noah gestured for Taryn to go ahead of him. He gave her another strange look. It was very likely her pregnancy. She garnered all sorts of reactions from people. It was amazing the personal questions complete strangers would ask a woman once she was showing. Whatever his opinions, he could keep them to himself.
Angelina headed up the hallway and paused a few doors down, gesturing Taryn inside. The office was small, but furnished with a desk, a lamp, an extra armchair in one corner and another bank of those beautiful tall windows that gave a view of a walking path, some green shrubbery and the clear lake beyond.
“I hope you’ll be comfortable here,” Angelina said. “If there is anything that might help out, just let me or Noah know and we’ll make sure to get it for you. Noah’s office is right next door.”
“This looks perfect,” Taryn said with a smile. “Thank you so much.”
“Now, you mentioned wanting to see the lodge and what we have to offer,” Angelina said. “I have an appointment in about twenty minutes, so I have to head out. But Noah will give you the grand tour. You’ll be in good hands.”
“Absolutely,” Taryn said with a smile. “Thanks a lot.”
Angelina left the office, leaving Taryn alone with the man. He stood in the doorway while she deposited her bag on top of the desk, then pulled out a tablet that was less cumbersome to carry around so that she could take some notes.
Noah said, “This is the key card for your office door. The only one who has access to changing your key card is me or Angelina, so you won’t have to worry about security.”
Taryn crossed the office and accepted the card from him. No wedding ring. She shouldn’t be noticing these things. Less than a year post divorce with a baby on the way, she wasn’t looking for romantic connections. She’d already bumbled in that respect seven months ago—an evening at a pub turning into a romantic encounter that left her pregnant. And that evening had started with her noticing a hand very much like Noah’s with no wedding ring, either. As if a man’s confirmed single status was all that mattered. And ironically enough, that man had been named Noah, too… Except he’d been slimmer and had a rather impressive auburn beard streaked with silver.
