Excerpt:

The lack of explanation from Clay caused her to glance over at him. Instead of paying attention to her, he was frowning and looking in the car mirrors.
Sandy Lynn whipped around as far as her seat belt would allow. Since the snow had stopped, more people had ventured outside, evidently to take advantage of the respite. The street was crowded. “What? What do you see?”
“Probably nothing.”
“Okay,” she drawled, “then why are you making scary faces?”
“I’m not.” Clay flashed her a lopsided smile. “This is my normal face.”
“Maybe it’s the black-and-blue eye socket that makes you look odd,” she said, not believing that excuse for an instant.
Again he stayed silent. She felt the car begin to accelerate. The tires slipped in the slushy street, and they fishtailed several times before Clay got it under control.
“Okay. That does it. What is going on?”
“We’re being followed,” Clay said as he sped up, sliding again and again. “I’m heading for the police station.”
“Finally, something that makes sense.” Bracing with her left hand on the dash, her right gripping the over-the-door assist handle, Sandy Lynn did her best to anchor herself on the seat.
Clay turned corner after corner until she was unsure of their position. “I thought you said—”
A hard smack jolted her car and snapped her head back against the support at the top of the seat. She wanted to shout orders at him, to tell him how to get them out of this situation, but truth to tell, she didn’t have a clue.
Prayer would be good, she reasoned, if she had the words to pray or knew what to ask for.
Survival leaped into her thoughts as she called out wordlessly to her heavenly Father.
The car was hit again. Clay righted it.
A harder smash followed quickly.
Clay hollered, “Hang on!”
They went airborne, diving nose-first into a drainage ditch.
Sandy Lynn saw his head snap forward just as the airbag engulfed him. The passenger side of the dated vehicle was not equipped with crash protection, so the seat belt was the only thing keeping her from flying through the shattering windshield.
Breathless and shocked, she just sat there, wondering if this was as bad as it was going to get or if their pursuers were going to stop to finish them off.

Harlequin Investigator Winter Blog Tour: Little Girl Gone by Amanda Stevens

LITTLE GIRL GONE by Amanda Stevens (on-sale Dec.28, Harlequin Intrigue):

About the Book:

Nothing matters more to her when a child’s life is at stake. Special agent Thea Lamb returns to her hometown to search for a child whose disappearance echoes a twenty-eight-year-old cold case—her twin sister’s abduction. Working with her former partner, Jake Stillwell, Thea must overcome the pain, doubt and guilt that have tormented her for years and denied her a meaningful relationship. For both Thea and Jake, the job always came first…until now.

About the Author:

Amanda Stevens is an award-winning author of over fifty novels. Born and raised in the rural south, she now resides in Houston, Texas.

My Review:

When Thea Lamb returns to her hometown, her task is eerily similar to her twin sister’s abduction 28 years earlier. She and her partner Jake Stillwell must work together.

What really happened?

Will things pass the professional boundary between Thea and Jake?

I was hooked by the title and the fact that the story involved twins. I choose many books with twins in them as I was a twin.

The writing was quick paced but I did find some parts of the book too slow and was struggling to remain interested.

I could identify with Thea’s realistically portrayed personal reason for wanting to solve the crime, but other than that I found her and Jake hard to connect with.

Thanks to Amanda Stevens and Harlequin Intrigue for my ARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.

Excerpt:

“While I was trying to fish the doll out of the pool, someone came from behind and hit me over the head hard enough to daze me. Next thing I know, I’m caught in a whirlpool several feet below the surface. I lost my flashlight, so I was spun around underwater in complete darkness. No up, no down.” He paused. “For a while there, I wasn’t sure how I’d get out.”
Thea watched his expression as he spoke. He still seemed shaken from the experience. She’d never seen him like that. “I knew something bad must have happened.”
He summoned a brief smile. “I know what you’re thinking. I even thought so myself at the time. So much for my keen instincts. Someone came up behind me and I never sensed a thing.”
“That’s not what I’m thinking.”
“No?”
“I’m thinking you could have died down there and I would never have known what happened to you.”
“Thea.” He said her name so softly she might have thought the tender missive was nothing more than a breeze sighing through the treetops.
The sun bearing down on them was hot and relentless, but Thea felt a little shiver go through her. It hit her anew how much she’d missed that tender glint in his eyes as their gazes locked. How much she’d missed his husky whispers in the dark. The glide of his hand along her bare skin, the tease of his lips and tongue against her mouth. The way he had held her afterward, as if he never wanted to let her go. But he had let her go and she’d done nothing to stop him.
She drew a shaky breath. “Don’t ever do that to me again.”
“Get caught in a whirlpool? I’ll do my best.”
She scowled at him. “Don’t make light. You know what I mean.”
“I’m fine, Thea.” He seemed on the verge of saying something else, but he held back. Maybe he thought she wanted his restraint. She did, didn’t she? They were in a precarious situation. Adrenaline and attraction could be a dangerous combination. Throw in unresolved issues and they were asking for trouble.

My Review:

Dr. Stavros Makris feels he can’t trust people after he’s lost his family.
Desiree Colton has a toddler son Danny who she has to take to the ER.

The chance meeting turns bad when a kidnapper wants Danny.

Can Stavros trust enough again to help Desiree get her child back?

Any book with a kidnapping of a child gets my heart racing, and this was no exception.

Danny is loveable and Desiree is a devoted mother. Stavros is hot.

The book is about love, priorities, facing your fears and doing what’s right to protect those who are important to you, even if they started off as strangers for you…..

I was engrossed in the action here and also wondering if the sparks would fly, and how much, between Stavros and Desiree.

A brilliant blend of action, suspense and drama.

Lara Lacombe is a new author to me and I enjoyed this fast paced novel.

I feel bad to be coming into the series on book 5 but at least I can get an idea of the characters. This is a standalone but I am glad that there are books after it, too. I can’t wait to catch up with the whole The Coltons of Grave Gulch series

Thanks to Lara Lacombe and Harlequin for my ARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.

Lara Lacombe
Stavros tapped his knuckles lightly on the door in announcement and entered the room. He was greeted by the sight of a woman sitting on the gurney, rocking back and forth as she held a boy in her arms. She looked up as he entered the room, and when their eyes met, Stavros felt a little shock jolt through his body.
He knew this woman. But how?
Feeling flustered, he frowned slightly as he studied her face, wishing he’d taken a look at the chart first. “Hi, I’m Dr. Makris. What’s going on tonight?” Even though the nurse had given him a report of the pertinent information, he always liked to have his patients, or their parents, tell their story again, so he could hear the tone of their voice and see their expressions. Sometimes, the way someone moved or what they didn’t say was just as important as their symptoms.
“Danny woke up about an hour ago with a high fever,” the mother said. “I tried to get him to drink water, but he refused. The night nurse at his doctor’s office said to bring him straight here.”
Stavros heard the fear in the woman’s voice; it was clear she was scared for her baby. Empathy swelled in his chest. He remembered all too well what it had felt like to hold a feverish child, to fret and worry over every little cough or sniffle. He’d thought his medical training would give him some much-needed perspective when it came to his daughter’s health, but if anything, the opposite had happened. He’d been so aware of the worst-case scenario, of all the things that could go wrong. He’d been the one to call the pediatrician for every little thing, his wife standing in the background trying to calm him down.
“Tell me about Danny,” Stavros said. He kept his voice level and calm, and walked Danny’s mother through the questions that would help him make his diagnosis.
She didn’t hesitate to answer him, and based on her detailed responses, Stavros could tell she was an attentive mother.
“All right,” he said. “Let’s see if your little guy will let me examine him.” Stavros already had a presumptive diagnosis in mind, but he always performed a physical exam to confirm his suspicions.
The toddler’s mother gently turned her son, and Stavros got his first good look at the boy’s face. “I know you!” The words flew from his mouth before he realized he was speaking.
Her expression turned guarded. “Oh?”
Stavros realized he’d put his foot in it, but there was nothing to be done for that now. He nodded. “I…uh…I helped look for your son a few months ago, after he was taken from the hotel.”
“You did?” Stavros heard the relief in her voice, noticed the way her body relaxed now that he’d explained his reaction.
“Yeah. I joined a search party after my shift that night.”
“Oh, wow,” she replied. “That was very kind of you.
I’m sorry I didn’t recognize you. I didn’t get a chance to thank all the people who helped look for Danny.”
Stavros waved away her gratitude. He didn’t want to tell her that he’d had to do it—he’d been driven by the memories of his own daughter’s kidnapping. As soon as he’d heard another child was in the same kind of jeopardy, he hadn’t hesitated. He’d jumped in his car at the end of his shift and headed to the hotel, needing to help in some way. Logically, he knew he’d been trying to save this boy the way he hadn’t been able to save his daughter. But at the time, he’d been ruled by emotions and the desperate desire to make a difference. Finding Danny wouldn’t bring Sammy back—he’d known that. But he wouldn’t have been able to live with himself if he hadn’t at least tried.

My Review:

Mac has a troubled past and arrives at Isabelle’s ranch. Will he settle in well or will he go back to being a nomad? With his aloof attitude, I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. I was hoping he’d soften with time. Not to give too much away but the characters are well created and Katie and baby Lily are adorable. Will the presence of kids and the ranch setting be the change of scene and chance to move on in life that Mac needs?

Will he fall for Isabelle? Will she give in to loving Mac first or will they stay “just friends?” All the anticipation of what was going to happen kept me interested in the plot which was helped by the good writing style.

Lynette Eason is a new author to me and I would very much like to review more of her books.

Excerpt:

Mac bolted from the truck just as the sun crested the horizon and spread light around the area. He raced around the side of the house to the back and skidded to a stop. The intruder the owner had mentioned had one foot inside the window and his gloved hands gripped the molding. Mac darted forward, placed his hands on the porch railing and vaulted over it. He landed on the wooden flooring with a thud and faced the frozen figure now half in and half out of the house. “Don’t do it, man,” Mac said. “Cops are on the way.”
His words seemed to send indecision sweeping through the guy. A pause Mac took advantage of. He lunged, grabbed two fistfuls of the hoodie material and pulled him away from the window. A heavy fist glanced off Mac’s cheek. He winced and jerked back, losing his grip. That gave the wiry figure the opening he needed, and he darted away from Mac to dash down the length of the porch, leap over the steps and head full-speed across the pasture. Mac pounded after him.
The guy broke through the tree line and disappeared into the woods. Mac did the same seconds later, only to stop when he realized he’d lost him. Mac turned, listening, his eyes searching. Finally, he heard the crunching of underbrush to his left and headed that way, hit a patch of mud and slid almost falling. He managed to catch his balance, but a second later, the roar of a motorcycle captured his attention. After one last push through tree limbs and vines, he found himself staring at the back of a disappearing bike. He didn’t know where the trail led, but there was no way he’d catch the guy on foot. With a sigh, he gave up the chase and retraced his steps.
When he came to the pasture beyond the tree line, he could see the woman who was, hopefully, his future boss. Isabelle Trent. She stood on the front porch, a little girl about five years old clutching Isabelle’s knee with one hand and a doll with her other. Isabelle cradled an infant in the crook of her right arm.
Dressed in jeans, boots and a long-sleeved red flannel shirt, she had her blond hair pulled into a messy ponytail. It struck him that she looked comfortable and completely in her element. If understandably shaken. Two police officers faced her. One wrote notes in a little black book while the other spoke into the radio on her shoulder. As Mac approached, Isabelle’s green eyes landed on him, and the officers turned. Mac made sure they could see his hands.
“That’s the man who came to the rescue,” Isabelle said.

My Review:

Kara Holland is a rancher with a dark past. Deputy Daniel Logan, her sister’s widower, and Kara come together when her plans to catch a killer backfire. Will they defeat the killer, or will it be too late?

I was very pleased to find Safeguarding the Surrogate in the selection of books in the Harlequin Intrigue Blog Tour. I thoroughly enjoyed Delores Fossen’s books His Brand of Justice and Settling an Old Score. Now, I can add Safeguarding the Surrogate to my list of books I love by her.

Safeguarding the Surrogate starts off right in the action and the action does not let up from there. Will sparks fly between Kara and Daniel and how will they separate work from pleasure?

My Review:

Ford Cardwell never expected to get a call from his college crush. When he hears a gunshot during the same call, he wants to go to her aid. His life isn’t going as well as he wanted but he’s forced to change priorities away from himself. Will he and the medical examiner be able to help his college friend before it’s too late?

I discovered BJ Daniels during an online writing summit and enjoyed her class. Trouble in Big Timber is the first novel I have reviewed by her and it is powerful, fast- paced and action packed from beginning to end.

I was immediately drawn into Ford’s life and his thoughts. Then, the focus changed once he’d got the call. BJ Daniels is a talented author and I thoroughly enjoyed the plot. The suspense is tight and the word choices are carefully chosen to help the pacing and atmosphere. I wanted to know what was going to happen.
