Mia

I remember pressing the doorbell that day. One simple act that set off a chain of events, leading to people dying and criminal charges.
The rain was lashing. I had an umbrella up and I just wanted to get inside the bar. He opened the door. That’s the first time I set eyes on Liam Fitzpatrick.
“I’m here for the interview.” I must’ve sounded like Baby in Dirty Dancing. I carried a watermelon.
“Come in,” he said, holding the door open. He let me squeeze past close to him. I closed the umbrella behind me and shook it on the floor.
“Can I leave this here?” I pointed to a spot on the ceramic tiles.
“Of course,” he smiled. “Let me take your coat.” He was looking at me in amusement, as though I was a little puppy coming in out of the cold.
“Thanks.” I shrugged off the wet garment and handed it over. His footsteps clacked confidently on the tiles as he walked across the room and slung it over a wall hanger. He picked up a clipboard from the edge of the bar and squinted at a list.
“You must be Mia Matthews?” he looked up at me again.
“Yup, that’s me,” I chirped, running a hand through my hair to simulate some sort of composure. He continued to look me up and down, taking in my pencil skirt, tight-fitting blouse and high heeled shoes. At least I hoped he did.
“Great, I’m Liam,” he smiled, holding out his hand. “I’m sure we’re going to get along.”
With those words, I already sensed the chemistry starting to fizz. I felt it that early in the game.
………….
I closed my eyes momentarily and allowed a deep feeling of relaxation to engulf me. I could have easily fallen asleep in his arms right there. Drifted into a sea of relaxed unconsciousness. Then I would have woken up the next morning and allowed him to rustle up eggs’ benedict or something posh like that. I would have grinned smugly when the other staff arrived for work. Sat there territorially. Showed them he was mine now.
But it didn’t happen like that.
He stood up, zipped his jeans, and said, “I better lock up babe.”
Just like that. A metaphorical slap in the face.
I better lock up and you better go.
So, this guy thought he could turn me on and off like a switch. He had no idea of the type of woman he was dealing with. I knew that love was like a game but I always had to win.
